Update: Pathways and Trails
The Sister Lakes Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) was formed
in 2009 with a dream and a plan for areas of improvement that the citizens of Sister Lakes would like to see over the next twenty years.
One of those plans was a Bike Path System that would service the area and possibly connect to other areas. The conceptual plan is to have a Trail Head in the Sister Lakes Area. (A Trail Head is an area where cars could be parked, bikes unloaded, rest room facilities would be available and a Bike Trail would start.) There is a marked Bike Trail just south of us in Silver Creek Township and there is a marked Bike Trail to the north of us in Hartford that comes as far south as the Interstate 94 overpass. We plan to connect into these existing trails. The CIA Board approached the members of the Lions Club about the possibility of a
trail head being located within Lions Park. They are very enthusiastic about the concept. The details of such an arrangement will have to be worked out between all parties, but the location is perfect.
The road between Hartford and Keeler, CR687, is in the process of
being rebuilt. At the time the road is being rebuilt, bike paths on both sides of the road are being added. The first phase of this construction was completed this summer (2016). Phase one covers the distance between the flashing light in Keeler to just beyond the food processing plant to the south. The lane markings will be completed this spring.
The second phase will start early next summer (2017). That phase will cover the distance between the flashing light, north to the I94 overpass leading into Hartford. This construction will also include bike paths on both sides of the road. The last phase of this plan will be to bring the bike path into Sister Lakes. The Authority is working with Wightman and Associates (an Engineering/Consulting firm) to
develop a plan, cost estimate and how to apply for grants to complete the project. The vision is: that it would be possible to ride your bike from Lions Park North to Hartford. In Hartford connect to paths all the way to South Haven or Kalamazoo. Or, Lions Park
South to Dowagiac.
